What is Magic Hour?

Most of us have heard of the term “magic hour” or “golden hour”, and we know that it occurs during sunrise and sunset, but scientifically, what is the magic hour and why does it happen? Let me explain.

As the sun is rising or setting, it falls just above the horizon (most likely 6°) and since it’s rays impact the Earth at a much lower angle, they must travel through Earth's atmosphere before they reach us. They encounter atmospheric particles such as dust and water droplets, which filter the sunlight, ultimately making it less bright and reducing the blue hues in the sky (Time and Date, 2017). During this process, there is more indirect sunlight exposed which softens contrasting shadows. The lighting becomes soft, diffused, and warm allowing nature to become the world’s natural filter.
